Tubman associate Juanita De Barros recipient of prestigious 5 year SSHRC Insight Grant

Juanita De BarrosJuanita De Barros has recently won a 5-year SSHRC Insight Grant, for a project titled “Colonial Institutions and Children’s Welfare in the British Caribbean.” This comparative project examines  colonial institutions that housed children in the British Caribbean between 1880 and 1940. It explores the establishment and evolution of these institutions and their roles as sites for the moral and medical regulation of Caribbean children; this project aims to further our understanding of the experiences, treatment and representation of children in these spaces.
She has also recently published a “Imperial Connections and Caribbean Medicine, 1900-1938″ In Borders: The Transnational Migration of Physicians in the Twentieth Century, eds. Laurence Monnais and David Wright (University of Toronto Press, 2016) and a collection of essays (co-ed) Sean Stilwell), Public Health and the Imperial Project (Africa World Press, 2015).
