Summer Institute 2017: “African Diasporas: Peoples, Cultures, Institutions”

    

 

CALL FOR PAPERS:

The Harriet Tubman Institute, York University, in collaboration with the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, presents the 8th Annual Summer Institute:  “African Diasporas: Peoples, Cultures, Institutions,” at York University, Keele Campus, Toronto, Canada from 8-13 August, 2017.

During the 2017 Summer Institute, international researchers specializing in the historical and contemporary experiences of persons of African descent will offer classes, panels, roundtable discussions and plenary sessions. Graduate, postgraduate students and members of faculty will also present the results of their research.

We encourage papers from a wide range of academic disciplines and methodological backgrounds, related to the diverse ways peoples of African diasporas have built social institutions, transformed societies, pioneered forms of communication and critical inquiry and created/transformed cultural products and belief systems.

Papers are invited to address the following themes:

o           Systems of Labour
o           Migrations of Peoples of African Descent
o           Expressive Cultures, Belief Systems
o           Politics, Economics, Social Justice
o           Colonialisms, Anti-colonialisms, Post-colonialisms
o           Genders, Sexualities, Family formation
o           Health, Medicine, Science
o           Biographies, Autobiographies, Auto-ethnographies
o           Memory, Testimonies, Oral Sources
o           Citizenship

Applicants are invited to complete and submit the following documents to the Harriet Tubman Institute’s Eighth Annual Summer Institute”: email si2017@yorku.ca

1)    the Summer Institute Submission Form
2)    an abstract of no more than 500 words
3)    a current CV.

Applications are now open. The deadline for submission is Monday, May 15, 2017.

Applicants will be contacted with the results of their applications.

o   Accepted applicants will be informed about the procedures for registration, including fees.
o   Accepted international applicants can apply for a limited number of bursaries

Registration/administrative fees: $100US; $20US (participants from the Global South and Africa only)

A programme of cultural activities and field trips will be announced.
