INIKÉ AFRIQUE! Celebrating Black History Month in UNITY!
In this International Year for People of African Descent, Performing Diaspora celebrates the African drum and the culture of African drumming which has accompanied the migrations of African people around the world.
This year’s festival promises to be both exciting and influential because it features two major performances and a six day drumming workshop involving some of the drumming world’s feature artists. The cost of participation has been kept to a minimum to ensure maximum participation and interested students are eligible for a subsidy if they are not able to afford the workshop fee.
Performing Diaspora is curated on behalf of the Tubman Institute by Prof. Modesto Amegago from York’s Department of Dance and Janelle Belgrave, a student at York’s Faculty of Education, both of whom are drummers.
A story on YFile has been published about Performing Diaspora 2011.
