The Harriet Tubman Institute Holiday Food Drive

Typically, a neighborhood food bank will distribute one food hamper per household member per visit. In 2012, the North York Harvest Food Bank distributed close to 170,000 food hampers (or 1.8 million pounds of food), accounting for a 19% increase in demand, alarmingly close to the post-recession levels of 2008.

North York Harvest’s catchment represents just over one third of the geographic area of Toronto, and it includes nearly half of the priority neighborhoods as designated by the City of Toronto.

Food donations are a vital way in which you can help to support hungry people in northern Toronto. The North York Harvest accepts non-perishable donations year-round, and this year, the Tubman Institute at York University seeks to raise 400lbs of food by December 17, 2013 to contribute to this effort.

The food collected through these drives provide individuals and families seeking emergency food assistance access to a better variety of items, enabling a more balanced diet and improving their quality of life.

Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world and people’s food needs are just as diverse. Think about variety when you donate and consider giving non-perishable food that you enjoy eating at home. Some suggested items are:

– baby formula
baby snacks
– canned meat
– canned/dried beans
– cereal (whole grains)
– canned fish
– canned vegetables
– grains (pasta/rice)
– canned fruits
– peanut butter
– fruit juice
– tea/coffee
– healthy snacks

Collection boxes will be located on the 3rd floor of the York Lanes Offices (to the left upon exiting the elevators) at York University, Keele Campus.

We believe that it is important for us to give back to the community and encourage you to stop by anytime, including weekends, to donate to our food drive. As an added incentive, we will enter your name in a raffle for every three items of food donated. If you would like your name entered in the raffle, you must bring the donations in during the week, Monday to Friday between 9am to 4pm.

Winners of the raffle prizes will be drawn on Tuesday December 17th—the final day of the drive—at the Annual Tubman Holiday Reception (details to follow).
