Afro-Latino/as: Radio Voces Latinas

Black History Month: February 2010

On each Sunday during February 2010, in celebration of Black History Month, Radio Voces Latinas agreed to host a number of programmes in collaboration with the S.P.A.C.E. Initiative. The programmes, which were organised by Abubacar Fofana León (and which included contributions by Vanessa Oliveira and Michele Johnson) focused on the experiences of Latin American persons of African descent, both in Latin America and in Canada. The programmes addressed issues of migration, gender, food security, identity and, as an open public programme, it encouraged discussions about one of the groups in the Latin American community that is often ignored.

The programme was very well received in the community and inspired a number of important conversations. It also emphasized the mandate of the S.P.A.C.E. Initiative, which is to promote community engagement with the scholarship about persons of African descent, living in Canada, as much as possible.
